RESUME,

This study is concerned with the challenges of teaching/learning the speaking skill in large classes in the selected 9ᵀᴴ form basic schools in Muramvya commune. The main aim was to identify the problems encountered by teachers and learners in large classes in the teaching/learning of the speaking skill in large classes. The basic questions that helpef the researcher to reach his aims include knowing wtether the books used in 9ᵀᴴ Form Basiv School suit learners to be able to make an effective self-expression. It was also important to see if large classes are obstacles for learners' performance in oral expression and if English teachers manage well large classes in the speaking skill. Two types of instruments were used in data collection, that is, classroom observation and written questionnaire. Result from the teachers and pupils' answers showed that the lack of space, lack of materials such as books, radio, etc, and lack of time are the major problems which hinder the teachin/ learning of the speaking skill in large classes. In addition, the great number of pupils do not allow teachers to manage a large class. It was also found that the techniques/ activities used in the teaching/learning of the speaking skill are not enough to enable learners to improve their expression. It was also found that the teaching/learning of the speaking skill in 9ᵀᴴ Form in Muramvya commune is not adequate. It was revealed that large classes are the hindrance of this precess. Furhermore, 9ᵀᴴ Form pupils' books are not sufficient and suitable for learners to improve their oral expression without forgetting the insufficient allocated time for English lessons. A number of recommendations were given to different parthers such as school inspectors, teachers, pupils and Government in order to work hard for the effective achievement of the teachers/learning process of the speaking skill in 9ᵀᴴ Form Basic Schools in Burundi.
