RESUME,

This work aims at assessing the teaching and learning of English in Burundi Basic schools in general and in Eighth grade in particular. It is based on the premise that in teaching/learning English teachers as well as pupils in basic schools may encounter problems. Questionnaires and classroom observation were the instruments used to collect data from respondents in 6 basic schools in Ndava Commune. After the data analysis, it was discovered that teachers and learners at basic schools are not interested in English and thus, become lazy and bored. The lack of materials and trained teachers in basic schools do not allowthe pupils to master the English language. Furthermore, the lack of motivation for teachers and learners handicaps the successful teaching/learning process. From these findings, recommendations were directed to the Ministry of Education, BEPEF, teachers, learners and other researchers.
