Résumé,
The present study explores the adaptability of the translation of the Gospel of Mark to the Burundian context and assesses the effectiveness of the Catholic and protestant translations of the Book of Mark in Burundi. A synoptic reading of the two texts was organised in order to compare the two versions of the translation of the Bible in Kirundi. 40 Bible readers were randomly selected in Bujumbura City to answer a questionnaire in order to find out their overall understanding of the two translations which was achieved by means of a mini-survey. Results indicate that though the two translations i.e. (id est) the Catholic and the protestant translations of the Bible have some common vocabulary, there is a high percentage of non-intelligibility between them. Some words are quite strange, especially from the protestant rendering, that poeple think they are rather kinyarwanda than Kirundi. Burundian Bible readers experience many problems to understand the protestant translation of the Bible in Kirundi. To deal with this inconvenience, most of them use the French and English versions, the big majority helping themselves with the French version. On the basis of these findings, it can be confirmed that the translations of the Holy Bible in Kirundi cause serious difficulties to Burundian Christians to understand well the Word of God they read in their everyday life. By confirming that these translations are hard to understand by Burundian Christians, especially those who only speak Kirundi, this study constitutes a recommendation towards the clergy to adapt these translations to the Burundian context so as to facilitate the understanding of the Scriptures in Kirundi by their followers.
