RÉSUME,

This study aims at showing the role of linguistic environment in the learning of English and kiswahili in some public schools in Nyanza- Lac commune. It is structured around three hypotheses: The learner's own linguistic environment impacts positively the learning process of foreign languages;English and kiswahili are not equally mastered by the pupils; the difference of achievement in Englsh and Kiswahili is due to the informal environment.The methodology used to carry out this research was observation, teachers' questionnaire, pupils' questionnaire and parents' questionnaire. As far as thr population was concerned,8 post-basic schools, 85 pupils of second year in post basic schools, 8 teachers and 19 parents participated in the research. The main findings are the following: when formal environment is matvhed or connected to formal environment in the process of learning, the achirvement in that process of learning is high; there is a difference in the achievement of English and Kiswahili languages. At the end, it was suggested to all partners concerned that English and Kiswahili clubs be created in the informal environment to facilitate pupils advised taht they should set strategies facilitating communication in English and in Kiswahili during free times. The study ende xith recommendations to variaous educational stoke holders to improve the learning of English and Kiswahili in Burundi.
