RÉSUME,

This study themajor linguistic challenges encountered by translators when translating from English into Kirundi and vice versa. The study was conducted in the University of Burundi in the Departement of English Language and Literature in the translation track where wtudents of BacIII were selected. Twenty five informants were taken as a sample population. Besides, translations of Iwacu Press were also selected and two of them were taken as a sample population. Questionnaires were elaborated according to three research hypotheses such as; the translation from English into Kirund or vice versa cannot be done without the loss of the original meaning, dictionaries are necessary for a goode translation and translators translate word for word or paraphrase. Data from both translators and students were collected by using questionnaires. Through students' questionnaire, it was found out that althoughthey spend much time learning how to translate, translating from English into Kirundi or vice versa, is still a great challenge. It was also found out that the most used method while translating, is paraphrasing. As far as the journalists of Iwacu are concerned, it was found out that they face the same challenges as the students.
