RÉSUME,

This research conducted at University of Burundi in the English Department assesses the students' use of listening strategies when coping with aural problems. The reason for the choice of this topic is its importance whereby everybody would like to be good at English and get to understand the native speakers' message. For this purpose, the reseaecher resorted to two research tools: classroom observation and questionnaires, one for teachers and another for learners. The research questions focus on listening opportunities, motivation, audio-visual materials probless, and problems of using listening strategies. Based on the research questions, all the research hypotheses need to prove respectively the degree of fraquency of motivation, opportunities, and problems of using materials and strategies. Through the hypotheses, the researcher analyzed the data collected by qualitative and quantitative methods. The researcher found that students do not take advantage of the opportunities given in everyday life to regularly the listening strategies. He found that students struggle in using listening strategies because of little time given to listening activities Moreover; the researcher revealed that students do not make use of available materials in the University because of their little motivation and the lack of students' awareness about the listening strategies. This lack of motivation is also in class where students are not given feedback by the teacher about the tasks assigned to them. In the end, recommendations are made to the students, teachers and other University authorities to heed the comprehension aspects of Englis. The university autorities should mainly increase the time devoted to listening comprehension course. On their part, students should conceentrate on what they are asked and resort to retention memory and other listening strategies to remember to remember what they hear. They should try to sit closer and remember what was spoken. Teachers should train the learners to use listening strategies.
