RESUME,

The aim of this studytitled "Encountered in teaching the speaking skill in post-Basic school" was to investigate the problems encountered in teaching the speaking skill and to propose adequate strategies for enhancement of the learners'speaking skill in general and of first year language sections in particular.The study was carried out in five high schools located in Ntahangwa commune,where 100 subjects selected were used in a population of 349 learners .100 learners along with 5 teachers were asked to answer a questionnaire.The data used in the study were collected through written questionnaires (one for the teachers and anoher for the learners) as clzssroom observation.After the analysis and interpretation of the data from the two tools,the researcher found out that the speaking skill was not given sufficient importance in the English course.It was not also developed in poet-basic School languages section and teachers did not use appropriate methods and adequate materiald.For this purpose,appropriate recommendations were made to people who take part in the education system,i.e the decision makers,the Ministry of education;the Government as well as the teachers and the learners.
