RESUME

The current study aimed at finding different reasons why RSC AFRICA Kirundi-English interpreters misinerpret and strategies they use to overcome them in their interpreters misinterpret and strategies they use to overcome them in their interpretation process.Finding causes of misinterpretation and strategies used to solve them,formulating some recommendationsand liable strategies to improve interpretation process was also the subject of this study.Starting from from the assumption that language and culture are closely related and may influence interpretation that language and culturale are closely related and may influence interpreters to misinterpret when the languages are different,it was understood that if RSC Africa and its intereters consider those causes and try to adopt new training and learning methods,the interpretation process could be enhanced.For that purpose,RSC Africa Kirundi-English interpreters partners from Bujumbura and Muyinga and professional interpreters have been given a questionnaire.In azddition to that,RSC Africa Kirundi-English interpreters were tape recorded while interpreting in order to avoid being bias and confirm or disconfirm the results from questionnaires.It was found that Kirundi-English interpreters misinterpret due to linguistic and cultural challenges.In fact,the unsuccessful interpratation was linked to the challenges the interpreters faced while interpreting.The factors that impacted negatively on interpreted utterances included:problems originating from the interpreter,iinput and the source language speaker such as lengthy utterances,use of new and technical terms,source language speaker such as lengthy utterances,use of new and tecnical terms,complexity of grammatical structures used,language interference,culture bound expressions and speed of delivery.For instance,technical terms were either avoided or approximated to lexical items that did not communicate the original concept in source language.Then some training and learning strategies have been suggested to remedy to those problems.
