Résume,

This work titled "Assessment of the teaching and learning of the speaking skill in English in 7 th Form of Basic school system " case of case of some selected schools in Burambi commune, in umonge province aimed at assessing the strategies techniques and activities used in teaching English language with an emphasis on the speaking skill. In fact, the speaking is very important as far as communication is concerned. This study was conducted in Burambi commune through the following research hypotheses : the methods of teaching the speaking skill in English in Basic school system are not appropriate and varied to promote the learners' needs, the strategies, techniques and activities used do not enhance the learning of the speaking skill in the Basic school system, the program and the timing allocated to the speaking skill do not allow the dvelopment of the learners' oral communication. In collecting the data, the researcher used two instruments : teachers' questionnaire and learners' questionnaire and classroom observation. Four English teachers and 100 learners of Burambi commune were investigated. This study found out that the methods used in teaching the speaking skill are not appropriate and varied to promote the learners' needs, there is lack of sufficient and varied materials to address the learners' needs in the speaking skill. The strategies, techniques and activities do not enhance the speaking skill in the basic school. In addition the program and timing allotted to the speaking skill in English in the 7th Form of Basic School do not allow the development of the 7th Form learners' oral communication skill. To develop the latter, various solutions were suggested and relevant recommendations to the education stakeholders were formulated.
