Résumé,

The present study deals wth facors affecting pupils' proficiency in spoken English in secondary schools in Vyanda Commune. This work was motivated by the fact that pupils of Arts section, though they study English, are not good at spoken English. The population of study comprised the 2nd Arts Form pupils and their English teachers. The work is based on three research questions about methods used by teachers, materials in place and attitudes of pupils towards English. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires, classroom observation and interview. The data collected in selected schools were put together, and interpreted. The analysis of data revealed lack of materials, bad choice of appropriate methods for teaching English, and bad attitude of pupils towards English are the main factors which negatively affect pupils 'proficiency in English in secondary schools in vyanda Commune. To find solutions to these problems, some recommendations were made to different partners in this process, namely teachers to use methods that involve pupils in speaking and to create English clubs at their schools to have enough time for oral practice : heads of schools to supply enough materials to enhance the pupils' proficiency and to encourage English speaking in their institutions by using it themselves in office : and pupils to develop a good attitude towards English
