RESUME,

The present work deals with factors affecting pupils' oral skill in English in Gitega Urban Center secondary schools. This work was motivated by the fact that pupils, though they English, are not good at the spoken form of it. A number of factors were raised and reviewed in this study and the researcher laid more emphasis on the students' attitude to the English language, materials in place, environment and socioeconomic background. The target population of this study comprises the first-form arts pupils and teachers of the same class. One hundred pupils and four teachers are treated as objectifs of the study and four schools were selected. The instruments used to gather the data were the questionnaire, classroom observation and interview. In the study, therefore, the following findings were indicated: pupils' attitude towards English is significantly related to their performance in the oral skill. The lack of adequate and appropriateteaching materials has a negative impact on pupils' oral skill in English, and the environment and socioeconomic background have a significant relationship with pupils' performance in English oral skill.
