RESUME,

This work entitled,"Assessment of teaching aids and strategies used in developing students' oral communicative competence in English at the University of Burundi" aims at finding out the teaching aids and strategies used to teach spoken English/oral expression in the department of English Language and Lierature in general and particularly in bacII and bacIII.It is also aimed at evaluating to what extend they are appropriate or not to the development of students' oral communicative competence in English.In fact,some students finish their sudies with inabilities to communicate orally but able to communicate in written form.
Thus,for better and reliable results,the questionnaire (one for students and another one for teachers of oral expression or spoken English) were used as the best instrument for gathering data.
Therefore,after the data were collected,we realized that oral/spoken English teachers do not use appropriate teaching aids (teaching aids that could help students to communicate in Englsh).Only bachboards and textbooks are mostly used as suggested by students.In addition,some strategies that may help students to develop all language skills are not used except group,dialogue and discussion.
Concerning useful teaching aids and stategies,it is worth mentioning that they are advantageous.Useful teaching aids help students to improve their reading skills while useful strategies make students working together and help to pactrice spoken Englsh.However,both teaching aids and strategies are disadvantageous for they seem not appropriate to oral expression/spoken English teaching,there are teaching aids with less focus on the development of vocabulary items or language skills strategies give a little time to practice English English language ,cause lazeness and may not help lazy students.
