The present study attempts to investigate the use of grammatical collocations in essay writing among Bac 3 majors in the department of English language and literature at the University of Burundi.
This study was conducted because little is known about the way grammatical collocations are used by Bac 3 English majors and the extent to which they are challenging for English majors in Burundi at least.It is based on four research questions.The first research question investigates the extent to which Bac 3 majors in the department of English language and litterature at the University of Burundi use N+Prep collocations in their essay writing.The second one explores the extent to which Bac 3 English majors use V+Prep collocations in their essay writing.The third questions tests which of the two types causes more problems to Bac 3 majors in the department of english language and literature at the University of Burundi.
The fourth identifies the main causes of grammatical collocations'errors made by Bac 3 majors in the department of english language and literature at the University of Burundi.In order to answer those questions,Bac 3 majors in the department of English language and literature at the University of Burundi were asked to write essays on the adoption of BMD system at the University of Burundi. N+Prep and Adj+Prep collocations were identified and analsed in the 70 essays taken as the sample.The results reveal that Bac 3 English majors master N+Prep collocations.This study also reveals that Bac 3 majors in the department of English language and literature at the University of Burundi.The results from the fourth research question reveal that many errors were caused by Kirundi interference,followed by french influence,and some others were caused by low knowledge of collocations.
