RESUME,

The current study aims at finding out different types of lexical errors that students of secondary school learners make in their English writings.Finding causes of those errors and learning and teaching strategies to reduce those errors is also the subject of this study.Starting from the assumption that French language may influence Burundian English learners to commit some errors in writing,it is understood that if English teachers and learners consider those causes and try to adopt new teaching and learning methods, the lexical error occurrence may be reduced. For that purpose, teachers and learners of the selected schools of Bujumbura city have been given questionnaires. In addition to that,an essay test was given to students in order to confirm the results from questionnaires. It was found that English learners commit many semantic and formal errors. Some of those errors are due to French interference, and a lack of English vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Then some teaching and learning strategies have been suggested to remedy to those problems. For example teachers should create many activities that motivate students so that they can learn new vocabulary quickly and easily. Also, students should be aware of their responsibility in their language learning and avoid negative attitudes.
