RESUME,

This work deals with an Analysis of Erors Made by Burundian English Learners in the Use of Present Tenses in Communal secondary schools in Rusaka Commune.The researcher wanted to investigate on the errors that learners often make in the use of Present tenses and them how those errors could be reduced and eradicated.To arrive at the results,the researcher used two instruments namely the questionnaire for learners and teachers as well as a diagnostic test given to Second Form Arts learners.The results got from the data collection revealed that learners' errors are due to many causes such as lack of modern grammar books,confusion when using tenses,conjugation problems,non-mastery of tenses,carelessness of pupils,shyness,to name but a few.This leads them to make errors like intralingual and interlingual transfer,overgeralization,interference errors and the ignorance of rule restrictions.Those errors affect learners' performance in English especially when they are expressing their idears.So,it is the teachers' duty to give much practice and encourage learners to use English in their everyday communication and to get accustomed to listening to English news so as to get correct use of tenses.
