This study deals with the impact of linguistic environment on the pupils' English speaking skill.It seeks to investigate how the linguistic environment of the learner affects his/her speaking ability.English is how taught from the basic school up to the university.Today,it is given enough consideration since Burundi has integrated some regional organization which use mainly English as a language of communication.although these initiatives,aim at moving the status of English in Burundi to the next level,some challenges are still observed.It is difficult for a secondary school student,and even graduates to easily express themselves in English .Therefore,the aim of this study is to investigate how the linguistic environment influences positively or negatively the English language performance.To achieve this,Gitega urban centre was used as area of study and informants were randomly selected.The instruments used to collect data included classroom observation,questionnaires to both pupils and teachers,and observation during break time.The results of the data collect revealed that neither the formal nor the informal linguistic environment .It has also been realized that pupils efforts of improving the speaking skill are only limited in the classroom setting.This is due to the lack of an adequate informal linguistic environment.
