RESUME,

The purpose of the present study is to examine learners' perceptions of the learning of English in first years post basic classes with a particular attention to learners of Buraza commune. Since learners do not share the same view towards the learning of English, the research was conducted on the basis of three hypotheses. The first hypothesis was that learners of Buraza commune in first year post basic classes have different attitudes towards the learning of English. The second hypothesis was that kearners' socio-economic status affects their perceptions of the kearning of English. The last hypothesis was that teachers' personality affects learners' ^perceptions of the learning of English. In order to find out learners' perceptions of the learning of English two questionnaires were used, one for English teachers and another one for learners. Besides the questionnaires, a classroom observation was also conducted in some first year post basic classes. After an analysis of data collected from four schools under study; it was proved that learners of Buraza commune have different attitudes towards the learning of English. Learners' socio-economic status affects their perceptions of the learning of English in first year post basic classes and teachers' personality affects learners' perceptions of the learning of English. The learning materials are not sufficient and the course content does not match with leaners' needs to improve their performance. We drew a general conclusion and formulated a few recommendations to teachers, learners, to school principals, parents and further resqeachers.
