RESUME,

This study "assessment of the teaching of the reading skill in secondary schools:case of 1st form scientific section b in Ngozi commune",aims at assessing how the reading skill is taught and learnt.This study sought to confirm or reject five research hypotheses which are:the time allotted to the reading skill is not sufficient,the lack of materials hinder the teaching of the leading of the reading skill,teachers are aware of the importance of the reading skill,pupils' attitude influences the leaning of reading skill,the teaching of the reading skull is not properly handled.
As far as the methodology is concerned ,the classroom observation as well as the questionnaires,one for pupils and another for English teachers,were used to collect the data.The area of study was Ngozi commune and the population of my study is made of pupils and teachers of 1st form scientific section b.The sample of my population was selected using the simple random sampling.
The findings of this study led the researcher to a number of conclusions.It was revealed that the time allotted to the reading skill is insufficient and that there is alack of materials in the school targeted by the study. Moreover,all teachers involved in the research said that they are aware of the importance of the reading skill.Also,all the teachers involved in the research answered positively saying that the pupils' attitude influences the learning of the reading skill.Finally, it was revealed that the teaching of the
reading skill is not properly handled.
