A thesis submitted in partial fulfullment of the requirements for the Award of the Degree "licence en Langue et Littérature Anglaises"

The present work deals with the words and expressions used in the jargon of the central prison of Muyinga. it seeks to analyze the linguistic mechanic mechanisms used by prisoners to form new words and expressions in their jargon. A face to face conversation,a questionnaire, an observation an intervieuw is the major instruments that have been used to collect the data. Finding proved the existence of the jargon in the prison. It is a nonstandard language charged with social value. Therefore, its interpretation is only understood by inmates who share the same beliefs and assumptions. The reasons behind are secrecy, earning a livelihood. In fact, its explanation is social rather than linguistic since much importance is put on taken for granted implicit meanings with complicated strategies. The semantic aspect is shadowed by malformation of meanings and creation of confusions. In addition, its vocabulary items are more cannotative than denotative, making literal translation too much misleading.
