Résumé,

The present work deals with the impact of the linguistic envoronment on English learners' oral performance. After many analyses, we noticed that English and French are taught in the formal education as second language and foreign languages but we realized that the spoken English is too lower than the spoken French.

This study helps learners to of English in Burundi to overcome these problems of poor performance in the English language.
Two kinds of questionnaires and classroom observation were used as instruments.

After analyzing the data, we found out that the speaking skill is not given a good place in the learning / teaching process and the speaking activities given tolearners are not enough. Besides, it has been revealed that families' socioeconomic status also negatively influences the language performance.
Thus, the linguistic environment in rural areas does not facilitate the mastery of English.
