RESUME

The duty of the researcher in this study was to investigate the factors that influence the teaching of grammar to beginners of English, In fact, much emphasis was put on problems met by teachers and beginning learners of English during grammar lessons. As field investigations were carried out on teachers and pupils in the Seventh and Sixth forms of secondary shool, we also aimed at analyzing the shortcoming of the methods used by teachers while teaching English grammar, and how those methods affect the learners 'communicative abilities.

To reach our objective, we based our study on three hypotheses whereby we evoked the use of inappropriate method to English grammar teaching as a hindrance to the learner's success to language learning; the lack and non-use of didactic aids by English teachers during grammar lessons and the promotion of English grammar teaching by making pupils use the language themselves during lessons. After the field investigations, the findings of our study revealed that the three hypotheses that we had desinged for the study were confirmed. Furthermore, as we collected the data through three instruments namely, classroom observations, teachers and pupils' questionnaires; we also got to the findings that factors such as motivation of the learner, his aptitude and attitude towards the subject, together wth the number of pupils in classes are influential to success in language teaching in general and to English grammar teaching in particular
