A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Award of the degree "licence en langue et littérature Anglaises"
The present work aims at finding out the roles of context and speaker's intention in the understanding of some Kirundi proverbs related to carefulness. It also aims at analyzing the impact proverbs may have on the hearer. As far as the methodology is concerned, this work provides some clarifications. It includes the population, the sampling techniques, the data collection procedures and the data analysis. In data analysis section I have put proverbs into contexts and I would like to see if the context and the speaker's intention help a hearer to understand the message conveyed through proverbs. Finally, some recommendations were drawn in order to provide a guide to future scholars in the area of the study.
