This work examines the double-sided portrayal of the Burundian woman in Emmanuel Nkeshimana's songs. It aims at showing how a traditional African woman after being victim of tradition, solves the problems of male domination.
This is done through a presentation of a woman who suffers under the dictates of tradition and the other who violates the dictates of patriarchy. It thus explores the latter's attempts at breaking the chains of tradition, to get her required freedom. This is the case of a woman who does not only get her freedom but inflicts pains on the husband.
The female character portrayed by Emmanuel Nkeshimana seems to be more masculine because she possesses male attributes.
Feminism and Sociological approaches are the theories that help us to better explore Nkeshimana's presentation of the woman in the society. Our study is written against the hypothesis that Emmanuel Nkeshimana presents the Burundian woman as both victim of and breaker of tradition.
