A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree"Licence en langue et littérature anglaises"

This thesis is a depiction of the impact of code-switching, code mixing and lixical borrowing on Kirundi language use. Through our work, we analyzed the nature of code switching, code mixing and lexical borrowing found in Kirundi language speeches. We found out what kind of words switched from Kirundi language to foreign languages. In addition we found out what factors determining code switching, code mixing and lexical borrowing.

After finding out the nature of switching and factors that determine it, we found the impact of code switching , code mixing and lexical borrowing. Some consequences of langauge contact were given in this work, such as language attrition that led to language loss and the fact that students and teachers are no longer able to make a complete speech without uttering foreign words.

However, many students and teachers do not always swith intentionally but they sometimes do it because of the lack of the equivelent word in Kirundi language and they decide to use a foreign word. We recommend therefore the government to create a department of Kirundi language charged with creating Kirundi names for new items. The teachers and students are recommended to try to avoid the use of foreign words in Kirundi language speech in order to keep Kirundi language original.
