This study sought to investigate the contribution of motivation to performance in English, Many issues were discussed to show the real contribution of motivation to English language learning in secondary schools. From the results of the national exam, we noticed that there was usually a disparity in terms of the performance of students in Bujumbura City and those in Ruyigi province. This inspired us to find out how motivation is responsible for this difference. The study was, thus, based on the hypotheses that motivation is an integral part of learning a second or foreigner language and that motivated students perform better than demotivated ones in the process of English language learning. After analyzing the data, we realized that the contribution of motivation in the learning of English can influence a performance and that motivation is a hub that lubricates the wheel of language act and makes the set objectives in language learning feasible and achievable. We finally recommended the following to the stakeholders in the education process : they should endeavor to promote an awareness of the value and role of English to those who are being taught. This should begin right from primary school as it has been introduced. Here it would be of great importance because the students will have the ambition to know many things that will increase their motivation.
