Résumé,
This study aims at finding out difficulties encountered in the teaching of English vocabulary in public primary schools in Burundi in general and in Burambi and Rumonge communes in particular. It was conducted to check whether or not primary school teachers were trained to teach the English language to public primary school pupils, whether or not teachers have enough material and whether or not they use appropriate techniques for teaching English vocabulary to public primary school pupils.
Thus, in order to find out the difficulties encountered in the teaching of English vocabulary , the work had to answer three research questions about the teachers' qualification, availability of teaching materials and the use of appropriate techniques.
A written questionnaire and classroom observation were the main methods used to collect data from respondents in twenty public primary schools, that is ten schools from Burambi and ten schools from Rumonge. The data were collected, analysed and interpreted .
Through the data analysis and interpretation, the researcher discovered that in our primary schools, English is not well taught because of some identified difficulties such as absence of qualified teachers of English, lack of enough materials and use of inappropriate techniques. To find solutions to these difficulties, the researcher addressed some recommendations to various parters who are concerned with the teaching of English vocabulary in primary schools.
