A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Award of the degree"Licence en Langue et Littérature Anglaises".

This work x-rays the decadence prevalent in Armah's novels, and shows how Armah drifts from pessimism to optimism. His Afrocentric approach as the work shows becomes a mechanism for change. The work further explores Armah's novels with the view of analysing the author's perception of, and response to African's contemporary problems. It equally shows how Armah is inspired by the new Pan-African and revolutionary vision. The work proves that Armah does not only diagnose problems but proffers solutions to the dismal state of things in Africa.
Written against the backdrop of the postcolonial theory, this work settles on the note that Armah has allowed African and African American writers to map out the future of African with compass, sensitive to present reality and past antecedents; a future of possibilities and alternatives.
