RESUME,

In this digital age millions and millions and millions of people worldwide are mobile phone subscribers and the mobile telephone is used in different educational and social settings.The present study attempts to investigate the extent to which the use of the mobile telephone would help to improve educational outcomes particularly in English language proficiency.The study was conducted among students in Department of English Language and literature at University of Burundi.
It is based on four research questions.The first research question investigates the extent to which students use the mobile telephone as learning aid.The second research question explores the extent to which mobile telephone can enable students' improvement in English .The third research question examines the strategies to motivate students to use mobile telephone in improving English.The last researcher question tests if the mobile telephone helps in the research.
The study was carried out by collecting the data from the questionnaires distributed to students and to the representatives of telecommunication companies working in Burundi.Therefore,the result from the analysis and the interpretation of data showed that the mobile telephone contribute to the development students' English language proficiency.At the end recommendations are addressed to different practitioners such as the Ministry of education,teachers,students and the representatives of Telecommunication companies working in Burundi.
