RÉSUME,

This study investigated on the teaching and learning of English productive skills in Burundi Basic Schools. It dealt with ways in which the productive skills are taught and learnt in basic schools. Its main purpose was to check methods of teaching and learning the productive skills. Data were collected using classroom observation and learners. The study was carried out with 256 respondents that is 192 pupils and 64 teachers of selected public schools in Bugendana and Mutaho communes. Fundings revealed that materials were not sufficient for basic schools. No other additional books except textbooks. No audio-visual materials to help learners to develop productive skill abilities. The study also showed that productive skills were not given enough time for practice. To this point, teachers preferred to deal with receptive skills instead of speaking and writing. As far as methods of the teaching and learning the productive skills are concerned it was noticed that copying down, dictations, reading aloud, repetition ( individual and choral ) tended to be favored by basic schools teachers. Concerning teachers' competences, the researcher noted that in three first grandes there is a great number of less competent English teachers. Therefore, this study tried to contribute to the promotion of the teaching and learning process of productive skills by proposing a variety of activities and methods to enhance speaking and writing.
