Résumé,

This study "Developing the Teaching and learning of the speaking skill in English in Burundi Basic Schools", seeks to investigate the ways the speaking skill should be developed in 9th Form classes in Burundi Basic Schools. The main concern of this study is to check the hindrances that hamper the development of the speaking skill and then to propose the strategies to improve that skill accordingly. This study was based on the following hypotheses : teachers of Basic School are not qualified to teach English in 9 th Form : teachers of 9 th Form Basic School do not use appropriate methods to teach the speaking skill : materials and textbooks used the speaking skill in 9 th Form of Basic School are not appropriate ; the learners of 9th form level are not motivated. The study was carried out on 88 respondents, i.e. 80 pupils and 8 teachers of selected Basic Schools in Tangara Commune. Two research techniques : classroom observation, teachers, and pupils' questionnaires were used. The researcher found out that most of the teachers of Basic Schools are not qualified to teach English, the teaching methods and materials used to teach the speaking skill are not appropriate. In addition, learners are not motivated to learn English. These weaknesses made the researcher propose the solutions to hire qualified teachers and to avail sufficient teaching/learning materials.
