Résumé,

This study is dealing with the assessment of the teaching of the English spoken skill to fourth form pupils by non-qualified teachers. This work was based on these three hypotheses such as : 1. Some secondary schools in some provinces of Burundi hold non-qualified English teachers in the fourth form. 2. Non-qualified English teachers have a great impact on the teaching of the spoken English in fourth form of secondary schools. Then, this research was conducted in the points of compass of Burundi including the center. The fourth form was targeted on and 247 pupils with their respective 10 English teachers were randomly chosen to be the respondents at 10 schools under study. Classroom observation and questionnaires to pupils and teachers were used to collect the data. These teachers are not equipped enough with the teaching techniques to allow their pupils enhance the speaking skill. Then, the researcher further discovered that non qualified English teachers have a great impact in the way the speaking skill is taught in the fourth form. In fact, some teaching techniques such as presenting dialogues, pair work, group work, role plays, simulations, narrating, debates etc, are put aide and the time allotted to the speaking is limited. So, pupils' attitude towards oral communication in English becomes critical since they are shy and afraid to speak it. So, teaching strategies are that English teachers should give many opportunities to the learners to speak in the classroom and encourage them to speaking it. This calls upon the retraining sessions' organization by the Ministry of Education to renew the teachers' teaching methods and provide them with audiovisual materials.
