The title of this work is problems encountered in teaching and learning english in Burundi basic schools:case of 7th form classes in Bugendana commune "The main concern of this study was to find out some of the problems encountered in teaching English in burundi Basic schools ,especially in 78 th form classes and suggest strategies to avoid them.The study was curried out in eight schools localed in Bugendana commune where 72 subjects were used as the population sample (64 learners and 8 teachers).The research hypotheses.First,it was so know whether teachers of 7 form are qualified for teachingEnglish or not.Second,it was to know if there are enough materials either for teaching or learning English in 7th form classes.Last,it was to know if the size affects the teaching a written questionnaire to the teachers and learners along with classroom observation.After the analysis and interpretation of the data from the tree tools,it was found out that Basic school English teachers do not teach English as they are expected to.As for learners,it was found that 7 th form learners do not find it easy to learn English since they tend to express their ideas mainly in their mother tongue.Furthermore,it was discovered that the training basic school learners of 7th Form undergo does not allow them to master english being taught by unqualified teachers.
Overcrowded class is also one of the main problems found by the researcher.It is then,in this light that a number of recommendations were made at the end of this study;to the governnment,BEPEF,the school managers,teachers,students and further researchers.
