Résumé,

This study intends to assess the factors which affect the teaching/ learning of the English speaking skill to Burundian learners and those in the first year post fundamental in particular.

Nowadays Burundian learners of English are not motivated to speak the language, adequate teaching aids and facilities are not readily available and the methodology used by teachers is often inappropriate.

The study has been conducted in five Lycées of Matana commune. And an oral test directed to learners, written questionnaires for teachers and learners and the researcher's own classroom experience lave been the instruments used.

In the light of date interpretation and analysis it has been revealed that the learners' lack of motivation, the teacher's methodology and the lack or insufficiency of school teaching aids contribute to Burundian learners' low proficiency in speaking English. In this way my hypothesis has been validated.

As a remedy, a number of recommendation to all groups of people involved in the process, i.e, learners, teachers, forthcoming researchers and Burundian government have been formulated.
