RÉSUME,
The present study on techniques used in the teaching and learning of the English language of some selected public basic schools in Kigamba Commune sought to investigate on techniques used in the teaching and learning of English in Basic schools. To achieve this purpose, three hypotheses were formulated. Grade 6 basic school teachers use rote learning methods, the methods used by grade 6 basic school teachers are not appropriate to the learners' needs and should be improved, and grade 6 basic schools teachers are not qualified. The work was conducted in Kigamba Commune in fifteen basic school of grade 6 where fifteen teachers were investigated. To collect data, two indtruments were used namely classroom observation and teacher's questionnaire. The data from the survey were presented, analysed and interpreted. At the end of the work, the findings indicated that grade 6 basic school teachers use rote learning methods, the methods used by grade 6 basic school teachers are not appropriate to the needs of the learners and should be improved, and grade 6 basic school teachers are not qualified to teach English language. Thus, suggestions on the good techniques to improve the taeaching of English were made to teachers and recommendations were directed to the Government; BEPEF English staff and to teachers.
