Résumé,

The thesis was carried out with an attempt to make a pragmatic analysis of some words used in the Burundian Unity Anthem : Ubumwe bw'Abarundi. The work is subdivided in five chapters.

Chapter One i the General introduction which introduces the topic, presents the background of the problem, objectives of the study-research questions, limitations and significance of the study.

Chapter Two made by literature Review, dealt with providing definitions of the key word, that is programatics, its related theories and fields.

Chapter Three presents which methodology is used in data collection and analysis. It shows also the difficulties encountered in data collection such as translation of some kirundi words used.

Chapter Four is the study itself. It gives answers to the different reseach questions stated in the first chapter. It made a pragmatic analysis of the different words used in the anthem.

Chapter Five is the General Conclusion and recommendations. It helps in giving suggestions on how to improve the undersanding of this anthem.

The objective of the study was to make a pagmatic analysis of some words used in the Burundian Unity Anthem : Ubumwe bw'Abarundi.

To conduct the study, I used two research questions which are the following :

1. What are the socio-cultural values expressed in some selected words from the Burundian National Unity Anthem ?

2. How does the Burundian National Unity Anthem "Ubumwe bw' Abarundi" make use of the different speech acts?

As findings it showed how the research questions have been answered, that is, through the influence of socio-cultural context in the understanding of the words used and the conveyed message through the use of different speech acts and their illocutionary forces.

Some suggestions and recommendations were made. Many studies can be done on the anthem in other domains such as semantics and it should also be given a place in education.
