Résume,

This study "the impact of teachers' qualification on English learners' pronunciation" aims at investigating on the ability of theachers in basic schools to teach English in general, and English phonetics and phonology in particular. In the work, the researcher was eager to know the level of trainings of teachers, their knowledge of English phonetics and phonology, and the relationship between the teachers' qualification and the learners' performance. The study was conducted in Muramvya province, in some selected basic schools of Rutegama commune. In this area, there were 21 basic schools, among them eight are from Ist year to 9th form. Then, using a stratified random sampling, the researcher chose 6 schools as sample, and then used 6 teachers and 43 learners from 7th form classes. To get information and collect data, the researcher used classroom observation, and a questionnaire for teachers, where teachers gave their points of view about the subject matter. Not only teachers, learners were also given a performance test to check their performance. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and interpreted accordingly. The result shoows that learners from classes with qualified teachers perform better than those from classes with unqualified teachers. For that reason, it is better that teachers in basic schools should be equipped with knowledge in English, and in English phonetics and phonology in particular, in order to traim learners and guide them in a right way from the early stage.
