This study investigated the strategies used by English teachers of 9th Grade in teaching English language et the Basic schools. The research was conducted in 6 Basic schools located in Kanyosha Commune in Bujumbura Province, where70 informants participated in the research, i.e. 6 teachers of English and 64 pupils.
The data were collected using written questionnaires to teachers and pupils, the, teachers' interview and the classroom observation. The Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and they were categorized according to themes. The data from interview and classroom observation were analyzed in relation to the data from teaches and pupils' questionnaire. The findings showed that Basic school teachers' poor quality of training and qualification do not enable them to teach. English as it should be done : most of them are unqualified to teach English. It was realized that strategies like : teaching using realia, pictures, contrastive structure and expositive ones were used but inadequately. This is because pupils were not given enough opportunities to communicate in class. The teaching materials for listening were not sufficient, It was also found that the performance from in-service teacher traing of English contribute to teach English effectively. It was finally found that their training as teacher-students does not allow them to teach appropriately and has a negative effect on pupils' performance in English.
