RESUME,

This study aims at examining impacts that social class and materialism exert on lovers as seen in scott Fitzgerald's the Great Gatsby.Using the psychoanalytic and Marxist theory, this study examines the role played by social class of an individual in achievng his American Dream in general and gaining love in particular in the Great Gatsby. This work is based on the hypothesis that the achievement of desired pleasures such as love is possible for anybody regardless their social class to a certain extent, but there are some obstacles which are against one's goal and they are influenced by his origin .In the novel, love and social class are seen as material things that people can achieve. Most of the caracters believe that by working hard either honestly or dishonestly, one can achieve his goal. Therefore, the American Dream, which was first believed as an honest way of living and the stick yard to mesure others, becomes corrupted by prejudice and materialism.
