RESUME,

This study dealt with the problems faced by both teachers and pupils of 7th Form classes while teaching and learning English .Five basic schools were randomly selected.in Bujumbura province precisely in Mukike commune where the study was conducted .The study was corried out with 55 respondents where the study was conducted. The study was carried out with 55 respondents out of 255,i.e,50 learners and teachers of selected seventh form classes in Mukike commune. The data was collected by the use of the teachers and pupils' questionnaire and the classroom obsercvation. The study was based on the following assumptions:(1) there are various difficulties encountered by both teachers and pupils while teaching and learning English in Burundi Basic schools ,(2) the english prgram provided by the English Department staff of BEPEF in the teaching/learning of english language in Burundi basic schools is irrelevant to the pupils' level,(3) there are many English teachers who are unqualified to teach English in Burndi Basic collected data were analyzed qualitatiively and quantitatively question by question by the use of tables. After an analysis of the results,it was found out that both teachers and pupils meet a great number of difficulties while teaching and learning English and that the english program taught in seventh form is not relevant to the learners' level. The time allotted to English lessons is not sufficient to adequately cover that is provided on the program. Also, some english teachers are not qualified to teach english and there is a lack of teaching materials. Those issues pushed the researcher to suggest some solutions to adopt:to the government to give enough financial means to the ministry of Education in order to meet the immediate needs in the educational system,to teachers to adopt new teaching methods,to pupils to train tremselves how the use English adequately.
