Assessment of the difficulties in teaching and learning of the reading skill in Burundi Technical schools case of final grades in selected schools in Buhiga Commune of Karusi province

This study explored the problems encountered in teaching and learning of the English reading skill in technical schools in final grades,and then suggested what should be done so as to improve the teaching and learning of that skill.This study was conducted in Buhiga commune of Karusi province.As instruments used to collect data from he informants,the researcher used both written questionnaire for pu^pils and teachers,and classroom observation during reading lessons.The data collection was done in two schools in seven classrooms,52 respondents participated in this reseach,2 teachers and 50 students.The data were analyzed throgh tables and percentage.Findings demonstrated that teachnical schools undergo a lack of appropriate and sufficient materials for both teachers and pupils.Teachers were obliged to write texts to teach on the blackboard and pupils copied them in return.Some teachers got resourced from the internet so as to find texts for classroom reading lessons.This research also revealed that time allotted to reading is insufficients.As texts to teach were written on blackboard,time for reading in classroom became insufficient.Reading lessson took place few minutes at end of lesson.Moreover,methods used by teachers in teaching the reading skill were also not appropriate for an effective learning of it.As reading lesson took place few minutes at the end of lesson,teachers did not follow steps for teaching reading lessons.
