Résume,

This study investigated the teachng/learnig of English vocabulary in private primary schoolsgrade 1 and 2 in Bujumbura Municipality. These are the hypotheses of this study :

-English vocabulary is not taught adequately in private primary schools grade 1 and 2.

-The challenges that teachers/learners encounter while teachng/learning English vocabulary are caused by the lack of teaching materials and the use of inadequate methods.

-Teachers do not significantly help pupils for a deeper understanding of new vocabulary items.

-Headmasters/Headmistresses, parents and the community environment neither encourage nor motivate pupils in their English learning.

-To collect the data, seventeen teachers and nine headmasters were involved in the investigation.

-Data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics through tables and qualitatively through content analysis. Findings show that even if the teaching of English vocabulary is inserted in listening and speaking skills, the new vocabulary items are not practiced adequately through those skills. Findings also prove that schools lack of teaching materials, enough time to practice the vocabulary items,, the use of inappropriate methods and the bad pronunciation of some new vocabulary items. Through those findings, it was proved that most of the teachers do not help pupils for a deeper understanding of new vocabulary items. It was also found out that great number of headmasters/ headmistresses and parents neither encourage nor motivate pupils in their English learning which affect negatively the teaching/Learning of English vocabulary. The headmasters do not supervise how English is taught. This happens because they are themselves reluctant to use English. The teaching and learning of English vocabulary should be supported by both partners from the very early age to sustain the development of communication in English for younger children.
