RÉSUME,

This study sets out to investigate the dual teaching of English and Kiswahili at the fourth level of basic school. It was intended to answer question that guided the research to achieve the purpose of this study four hypotheses were formulated such as dual teachers of English and Kiswahili have varied views about the teaching of English and Kiswahili, the teaching of English and Kiswahili is negatively influenced by the sociolinguistic environment, classroom practice portray instances of negative effects of teacher's dual teaching of English and Kiswahili, there are no teachers trained to teach both English and Kiswahili, time allotted to teach them is not sufficient. The study was conducted in Makamba commune with 10 teachers investigated in 10 schools selected. To carry out this study, three instruments were used such as teachers' questionnaire, interview and classroom observation. Findings in this researchshowed that sociolinguistic environment influences negatively the teaching of English and Kiswhili, the mixture of language in classroom practices is the main technique used to teach them, teachers of both Engish and Kiswahili are not trained to teach them, the time allotted to teach them is not sufficient. In the light of research findings, recommendations were formulated to Government in general and the Ministry of Education in particular to introduce lessons related to phonetics and phonology, to organize trainings for unqualified teachers several times, to BEPEF to send English and Kiswahili inspectors on field, to plan other strategies aiming at the performance in English and Kiswahili, to teachers to read many books, newspapers written in the target languages, to listen to the news recorded from native speakers.
