RESUME,

Our research was conducted on<<An assessment of the teaching and learning of the comparative and superlative Degrees.The case of 4th form in selected secondary schools in Rutegama commune>>.This work aims at assessing the teaching and learning of comparative and superlative degrees in 4 th Form classes,throughout Burundian secondary schools.The study attempts to test the following hypotheses :Burundi secondary school pupils still have confusion with English adjectives in the comparative form,Burundi secondary school teachers do not take enough time to teach the comparative form,teachers and learners generally encounter problems related to the lack of time and materials relevant to the teaching and learning of the comparative and superlative degrees.The study was conducted in Rutegama commune.Five schools were selected,5 teachers and 150 pupils took part in survey by means of questionnaires.Teachers and learners were observed through classroom observation while the teaching/learning of the comparative and superlative forms was taking place.This task was done especially to find out how both teachers and learners behave during grammar lessons.At the end of our research,we noticed that the teaching and learning of comparative and duperlative degrees needs to be improved.There was a lack of relevant materials,time allotted to the comparison degrrees is not enough.So,it would be better to have enough time and relevant materials to teach as well the comparetive and superlative forms to develop pupils' competence in grammar lessons.
