Résumé,

This study investigated the English classroom challenges and strategies used in Teaching and learning grammar and vocabulary in the 9th grade of the basic schools in Burundi. The main concern of this study was to identify challenges that teachers and learners face in the teaching and learning of grammar and vocabulary together with strategies to face those challenges.

Data were collected using classroom observations and questionnaire administrated to teachers and learners as the research instruments.
This study was carried out with 102 respondents, that is, 93 students and 9 teachers of selected basic schools in Mabanda Commune. Data from the observation Guide were presented and analyzed in details. Data from the questionnaire were reported in tables with frequency and percentages. Findings show that lack of teaching / learning aids ; the time factor ; a great number of students ; low level of the learners ; lack of sufficient teaching strategies are the main challenges. To face those challenges, motivating learners ; teaching the spoken grammar and vocabulary in groups ; using objects, charts, maps and drawing are some strategies to be used in grammar and vocabulary teaching and learning.
