Résumé,

This study aimed at analyzing the impact of class size on the active learning and teaching of grammar in 4th form classes in selected schools of Mugongo-Manga Commune. In fact that factor affects negatively the teaching and learning of English in general and teaching of grammar in particular. The researcher conducted the study with five teachers and students from five schools in Mugongo-Manga Commune. Two questionnaires and classroom observation were the instruments used to collect data from teachers and pupils. The data were presented in the form of tables and percentage. The were then analyzed and interpreted. It was discovered that large classes hinder the better learning of English language and grammar in particular since the teachers did not involve every student in the lesson. Only few students had the chance of participating actively in the lesson and those were brilliant students. The weaker ones became uninterested partly because they felt ignored by the teacher. It was also discovered that class size is a great challenge to achieving success in the teaching and learning English language generally and grammar in particular as the teacher could hardly prove their efficacy in classes thereby resulting to poor output from students. From the findings, recommendations were directed to différent partners who are involved in the teaching/learning of English in general and of grammar in particular.
