Résumé,

This work examines corruption and adultery in Graham Greene's The Heart of the Matter. It deals with the causes and manifestations of both corruption and adultery and shows that those acts begin especially in the heart and bring moral and physical effects. This work explores also the consequences of both corruption and adultery, principally on the victim and on the whole family as Greene state it in The Heart of the Matter, the novel under study. This study is based on the assumption that the practice of corruption adultery in the Heart of the Matter principally affects the culprit and the surrounding community in general. in the course of this study, the use of a psychoanalytic. Literary Criticism is of a great importance in odre to provide a good understanding of this work. In fact, the aim of psychoanalytic Literary Criticism can be the psychoanalysis of the author or of a particular interesting character in the work. Then some questions arise in our mind : What is the interesting character to be analyzed in The Heart of the Matter? What are the main causes of corruption and adultery in this novel under study and their consequence? What should be done to stop or/ and to eradicate corruption and adultery?.

The research reveals that the period of war contributes much in changing the behavior of Major Scobie, the protagonist of the novel and it leads him to commit the acts of corruption and adultery. The research also shows that Scobie is dominated by his Id, since he always satisfies his feelings without any consent with his superego. As matter of fact his life is immorally conducted to end by suicide. Then, we realize the causes and manifestations of corruption and adultery in the heart of the Matter are the factors of the life changing of Scobie. t the end of this study, some recommendation are addressed to every individual, churches and institutions of the police to contribute to the stop of any tentative of corruption and adultery
