Résumé,

The present study entitled "A comparative study of public and private secondary school students" performance in the learning of English reading skill; case of selected schools in Nyanza-lac commune." mainly attempted to find out to which extent students perform and to find out the différences as well as similarities in learning of the English reading skill. The study aimed at investigating on teachers and students in both areas. The process of comparing was done in collecting marks of English National Tests of two consecutive years, the questionnaires directed to English teachers and students in 4th Forms and the classroom observation. Trough this research, it was found out that public secondary school students in Nyanza-lac perform better than private secondary school students in the learning of English reading skill. The learning conditions in private are more unfavorable than in public teaching/learning and no equality in equipment of instructional materials which are the cause of being less interested or motivated in learning of reading skill. Concerning the individual marks in English National Tests, a gap in achievement was clearly perceived. It was also found out that the differences in performance were due to the inappropriate methodology used by unqualified private teachers. Through the answers, it showed clearly the significant differences between students of both areas in achievement in the English reading skill, it also showed that students can perform equally when they are taken care of adequately. Concerning the factors that determine the success or failure of students in English National Tests, the work showed that there are no other factors apart from instructional materials, learning conditions, and teacher's qualification or performance and motivation can create differences. in the light of this investigation, a number of recommendation were addressed to various stakeholders in the education sector.
