RESUME,

This study discusses the meanings and morphology Kirundi place names in Rutana, Mugamba, and Gita,ga constituencies. The study outlines the morphological pattens followed during the formation of Kirundi toponyms and classifies them accordingly. The research is largely descriptive and the data was collected through oral structured interviews, intespection and questionnaires and hundred and five informants have been interviewed among them, fifty four give the reliable information. The research verifies the toponyms' interpretation morphologically and semantically, the word formation incoded in those toponym and the relationship between the sense-referent and referent-sense. Findings of the study indicate that toponyms are both morphologically and semantically descriptive language units. They hence bring out types of meanings present in Kirundi toponyms and how they are enhanced by the morphological units of the words. Morphological processes such as prefixation, suffixation and reduplication and morphophonological processes like vowel deletion which are of importance to this study are unveiled.
