RÉSUME,

This thesis discusses the difficulties that teachers of English encounter during the teaching process in Burundi basic schools. It attempts to esplain how teachers' qualifications influence the teachin/learning of English in Burundi basic schools. It equally examines the impact of insufficient teaching materials on pupils' performance. Moreover, it attempts to investigate on the problems that both teachers and learners face while coping with the English curriculum in Burundi basic education. The study was conducted in Bururi commune. 15 schools were selected and 19 teachers took part in the survey by means of questionnaires Besides, most teachers and learners were observed in classroom while teaching/learning was taking place. This was done to find out how teachers go through lessons and how teacher-pupil interactions are carried out.At the end of our research, it was noticed that unqualified teachers find it difficult to efficiently deal with the seventh form English curriculum. We also realized that there is a back of teaching materials in some seventh forms of the basic school, and this negative situation influences the teaching/ learning process.
