RESUME,

The aim of this study was to invstigate the problems related to English class management in some private secondary schools in general and in Bujumbura City i particular. This implies how English classes are managed by teachers. The research intends tio provide an answer to the problem related to the teachers' instructional strategies and their managerialtechniques, problems related to invironment (working conditions) are also to be noted as a serious handicap to English class management in most schools I visited. The research was carried out in Bujumbura City in four selected schools with at least one English teache at each school. The study was conducted using a naturalistic classroom observation and a written questionnaire to be answered by the teachers who had been observed on teaching. The research reveales that the teachers failed to use their managerial characteristics and techniques due to the arge number of students. Another main problem that should be addressed as a cause of a bad class management is the lack of materials (teaching aids). Again, the large number of students in classes is an other important challenge to the effective managent of an English class. Last but not least, it has been revealed that students' indiscipline is an other relevant issue to be handled carefully in order to successfully deal with it. It was therefore from those mentioned problems that recommendations were made to those involved in the process of a good class managent.
